Public Transportation

This question is from Laurie P., a soon-to-be TravelScoot owner:

I'm getting my scooter soon and am a bit worried about using it on public transportation. I have experience using a heavier scooter and know that the drivers on the Boston buses tend to strap the scooter down using a lot of force. Will that damage the scooter? Any tips on where on the scooter the straps should go? I also will be using the scooter at Disney World and the bus drivers there seem to insist on tying the scooters down with multiple straps whether or not you stay seated on it.

I can't wait to get scooting! Thank you all for your input.

  1. Hi Laurie. I am about to get my scooter, and live in Boston as well. Can not answer your question, but thought we could share Boston info as we use our new scooters! jenherrington at ymail dot com.

  2. All new buses must have ramps and they are so much better than thd old lifts. Here they even put them at the front. Unfortunately, they still have a few older buses in service.
Just got back from Disney World. Variabilty experienced among the bus drivers and boat captains. Access good. Some strapped me in with me on it. Some strapped the scoot down with me transfered to a seat and some just let me hold it while sitting on a seat just like it was stroller, but they make strollers fold up which I could have done had they asked. Disney is very handicapped friendly, but would recommend using one of their wheelchairs if you plan to ride many rides. The Disability brochures are very handy and do a great job of explaining ride requirements.

  3. Hi Laurie, I hope you will let us know how your public transportation adventures go. I have no experience in that area, but I am interested in how it works out for the scoot in case I am ever in that situation.

Looking forward to hearing about you and your scoot!

  4. Thank you all for the helpful comments! I'm a frequent Disney World visitor, but have always used a rented scooter from Walker Medical--usually a Rascal. I was just worried that the lighter Scoot would be damaged from the straps and am very glad to hear that you've done it with no problems. Deep Shag, I definitely see a scooter-meet in our futures! I'll e-mail you!

  5. I have not ridden on a public bus where my scoot had to be strapped down, but I have ridden smaller transport vehicles (such as those vans that the hotel sends to the airport) and I got off the scoot, they strapped it securely, and on we went. I don't think the TravelScoot can be harmed by a firm strapping.

I also got on the van while still on the Scoot via a ramp that went up and down like an elevator, and that was a bit nerve-wracking, but doable. When I ride BART, the San Francisco Bay Area's train, I get off the Scoot, sit in a sideways seat and tuck the Scoot close to me in the aisle. I usually hold onto it so it doesn't roll around.
