Independence Day at the Mall

We've had a lot of wonderful posts about big, exciting adventures. My adventures might seem small by comparison, but they are HUGE for me. On Saturday I had an urgent need for something that could only be found at the mall. I didn't worry about where I had to park, and was inside within a few minutes. True, I had to dodge lots of baby strollers and wandering texters, but people who are walking have to do that too. Several stores and a few tight squeezes between crammed together clothing racks later, I was happily waiting in line with all the other weary shoppers. I even got to have an enlightening conversation with a little girl who looked up at me and said, "Why you riding your bike in the store?" She was just curious so we talked about it for a minute and then talked about the ballerina costume she was holding.

Later that day I needed to make a quick trip to Walmart to pick up some thread. Before the TravelScoot there was no such thing as a "quick trip" to Walmart. If I was lucky enough to find a store scooter available and charged (good luck with that around the holidays!), it would have taken quite a while for me to get in and get what I needed. The whole trip from getting in my car at the house to arriving back home took 30 minutes -- absolutely amazing.

So yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and I know because I saw him at the mall!

This qualifies as a Christmas miracle for me because without my scoot, I'd have never made it into the mall.

  1. I can really relate to this post. I wouldn't be able to shop any where without the scoot. I still have not been in the mall, but its on my "to scoot" list.

  2. I have been to several malls within the last two months. That is amazing because I have not been in a mall in the last five years!! My wife thinks I nuts for wanting to go (I am not a shopper)but I just wanted to see what I had been missing. The 'Scoot opens all kinds of options for those of us with mobility problems.

  3. Cynth, you haven't been to the MALL yet?! I thought you'd done everything possible. I can't wait to hear about your first trip. Watch out for those baby strollers and wandering texters!

  4. Chuck, it really IS amazing. I wanted to see what I'd missed too. It is so wonderful to know that no store is off limits to me.

  5. I wasn't sure when I first ran across the travelscoot on a review site, but after reading your blog all day until my eyes are blurry, I'm convinced :-D

    I *want* one!

I'm a mom with 3 young kids and fibromyalgia, and it seems to satisfy most of my (generally conflicting) needs.

    I also ran across this:
    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11306719&whse=BC&Ne=5000001%204000000&eCat=BC%7C114&N=4033998%204294907282&Mo=0&No=0&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price%7C1%7C%7CP_SignDesc1
Which I'm seriously considering as a kid/shopping/gear accessory for the scoot.

  6. What a great cart!

I'm sorry your eyes are blurry, but I'm glad it was for a good cause. We're glad to have you here. Feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like. You can post them here or email them to me, elizabeth@ifisher.com.

  7. I'm not sure why you would think that a Mall trip isn't a major adventure - especially at this time of year. :) Truthfully, I've gotten where I swing by a Mall when I've had a bad day just to have an excuse to Scoot. It's such a thrill to be able to zip around instead of hobbling.

I also have noticed a change in both my parking habits and the shopping time. Instead of "OH @#$%! no close spot, do I really need to go?", it's "this will work" where ever I end up. The amount of time spent actually shopping (fun scoot runs don't count) is at least about half the usual time. So Cool!

By the way, the Santa here at the Mall was jealous of both the TS and the ice cream cone I had. :)

  8. That is a fantastic cart. It would be great for the times I really need to buy a 50 pound bag of ice melt and heavy stuff like that. Not to mention my grand daughters would love being pulled around in that.

Elizabeth, I was saving the mall for Christmas shopping but I have been sick since Halloween, so I ended up doing all my Christmas shopping online again. Maybe they will have some good sales after the Holidays and I can make it then.

Krystal, ditto on the parking spaces. I have a handicap parking permit but I seldom use it now that I can scoot from any parking place. I leave the reserved spaces for someone who is scootless.

  9. What do you do with a 50 pound bag of ice melt?! (Remember, I live in Louisiana.)

I hope you're starting to feel better. Scooting the mall will be MUCH more fun when you're at full speed, so to speak. :-)

Just remember to watch out for those texting pedestrians!

  10. LOL you melt ice with it... my driveway and sidewalk turn into an ice flow in the winter. Though I live in the banana belt of Idaho we still have sort of a winter here.
